Lights out for fireflies in Thailand
Bangkok (dpa) - Pollution and disappearing habitat are signalling lights out for tropical fireflies, a Thai conservationist warned Saturday.
The number of fireflies has been decreasing as forests in the mountains and mangrove forests once common along the Thai coasts have made way for development and the remaining swampy areas become more polluted, Dr Chaweewan Hutacharern said.
"They are a spectacular insect. They are beautiful," the former official with the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
They also offer potential in fields including medical research, and the species with synchronized lighting in mangrove forests have tourism possibilities, she told an audience at Bangkok's Siam Society.
But if we lose them we can't use them and they need to live in swamps feeding on snails and earthworms and those areas are disappearing.
Chaweewan said she was talking specifically about Thailand, but understands the situation is similar in neighbouring countries.
Fireflies are actually beetles with specialized light-emitting organs on the lower abdomen and are harmless to humans.
There are about 30 species of fireflies in Thailand and each has a unique pattern of flash rhythm and light intensity which helps each sex recognize a potential mate of its own species.
Most species use flash communication to find mates, but a few species also use deceptive flash signals to lure prey. The light may also serve as a warning to predators.
Chaweewan said there are few remaining places in tropical Asia where one can witness the nocturnal spectacle of synchronized fireflies and the number continues to decrease.
She said people need to think more of nature and less of increasing economic indicators. But she added there is hope as some coastal mangrove areas are being replanted in Thailand.
